Paul Knocker (B 49) is pleased to share an account of his experience as a midshipman on the Royal Navy’s survey ship, HMS Owen, which, in the 1950s, completed detailed surveys of the Persian Gulf.
Whilst at Uppingham, Andrew David (C 69) became interested in the former Uppingham railway station, with encouragement from his art teacher, Warwick Metcalfe, and history teacher, Roy Ford, whose Friday evening local history bicycle trips around Rutland made a lasting impression.
To mark the 130th anniversary of its opening, Andrew is delighted to share a brief history on the Uppingham Station below.
An account by Nicholas Mercer (SH 76), Rector of Bolton Abbey, whose travels to Uzbekistan prompted memories of being the Secretary of the Flecker Society at Uppingham over 40 years ago. He was pleased to share a short biography on James Elroy Flecker (M 1901).
We are pleased to share Michael Gavins' and Peter Lloyd's contributions to our Chalkies' Corner feature, published in Issue 49, 2021/22.
Both were much respected and admired former Housemasters who spanned over 61 years of service between them and had a positive impact on so many pupils during their time at Uppingham. We were very sorry to hear news of their passing earlier this year, Michael on 23rd February, and Peter on 14th April.

We are delighted to provide a personal tribute to the much loved Renee Dalby, who was Matron of West Bank for 23 years, from 1965 to 1988.
